Why Have Safety and Health Programs?

You may ask yourself if I am a small company with just a few employees and visitors, why do I need a Safety and Health Program for my Company.  Here are a few reasons.

  • OSHA – The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) indicates “Each employer –shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees and shall comply with occupational safety and health standards promulgated under this Act.” A penalty of up to $16,550 could be assessed for each violation.

  • Lawsuits – If an employee is injured, the employee would be covered by Workman’s Compensation. The average compensation is $47,681. However, if a visitor is injured just from a fall, a lawsuit could cost you considerable money. The average legal settlement ranges from from $10,000 – $50,000.

  • Property Damage – There are more than 3,000 office fires each year. Even if there are fire extinguishers present, more than 50 percent of the employees do not know how to use the extinguishers and can spread the fire. This result in millions of dollars in property damage.

  • Death or Serious Injuries – OSHA indicates emergency response should be available within the first 3-4 minutes. If cardiac arrest occurs the chances of survival decreases with each minute. The normal response time in urban areas is approximately 8 minutes. In 2020, there was a 17% increase in nonfatal workplace injuries due to electricity. The majority of occupations getting injured are non-electrical with little or no electrical safety training.
